KITESURFING

Kitesurfing is a surface water sport combining aspects of wakeboarding, snowboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, skateboarding and gymnastics into one extreme sport. A Kitesurfer harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water on a kiteboard similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard, with or without footstraps or bindings.

Learning Stages

LEVEL 1: DISCOVERY
You want to master the elements and discover the amazing sport of kiteboarding? Your IKO Instructor will help introduce you to the sport and teach you various safety rules and skills on land before going into the water; The safety training will teach and show you how to assess the wind and physical location, as well as show you how to properly manage the equipment; set-up; and control the trainer kite.

LEVEL 2: INTERMEDIATE
It is time to get in the water and attempt your first water start with your IKO Instructor. You will now put your skills to the test and experience the full potential of the wind. You will learn to use the kite power to body drag in all possible directions, water relaunch your kite, self rescue, recover your board; and become proficient enough to begin riding on your own!

LEVEL 3: INDEPENDENT
Its time to become an independent rider and the more you learn, the more passionate you will become about kiteboarding! On this level, your IKO instructor will show you how to ride upwind, toe-side, and help you focus on higher skills like controlling your speed by edging, changing direction without stopping, self-launching and self landing safely. As an independent rider, you'll be able to ride on your own and rent equipment wherever you go.

LEARNING DURATION

Your IKO Certified instructor will always try their best to get you to finish as many of these levels within the time slots you booked in. Learning speed depends on the wind conditions, class size, and students' athletic ability. From our previous experience in teaching, and with ideal teaching conditions, we found these to be the average learning durations:

LEVEL 1: DISCOVERY - TWO HOURS

LEVEL 2: INTERMEDIATE - FOUR HOURS

LEVEL 3: INDEPENDENT - TWO HOURS

Seems simple, but varies according to your weight and what wind strength you will be out in, and what conditions your local spot will offer. Generally starting with a “Freeride” with full safety features will help you progress quickly and safely. In most cases this will be the Kite you stick with as it offers performance with ease of use. For boards you are looking again to start with the Freeride board which has generous flex, and enough width and length. Speak to us or your local shop to get the right information on what you need. Beware of local advice as some will guide you into gear which you may not be ready for.
Compare it to driving a car! By a proper practical and theoretical education plus a responsible attitude, risk gets minimized. A complete and professional schooling is the base requirement. Only a kiteschool is able to teach you decent handling of equipment and how the evaluate miscellaneous situations.
Besides the ability to swim, nothing else is required. Although physical and mental fitness is advantage, we will provide easy access for everyone, not that sporty.
First of all: Wind plus at least one Kite including a bar and a board. As you own more kites of different sizes, you can handle different wind conditions while on the waves.
Generally, we provide you all basics within the first two days and you should be able to get a few meters of surfing without falling within the first three to five days. Of course, talent, skills, motivation and natural predisposition influence the progress of improvement. Don't forget, if it takes some time...don't become desperate, be patient! That's how we all did it! 🙂
